How Therapy Works.

Therapy should be more than just talking about what's wrong. At Lone Rock Counseling, we'll focus on understanding what's happening, finding practical ways to move forward, and creating changes that actually fit your life.

Real Conversations

Therapy should feel like a real conversation - not a lecture. A place where you can be honest without having to pretend everything is fine.

Practical Tools

We'll work on strategies you can actually use outside the therapy room to handle stress, relationships, anxiety, and everyday challenges.

Meaningful Change

Therapy isn't about becoming someone else. It's about understanding yourself, breaking old patterns, and moving forward. Therapy isn't about becoming someone else. It's about understanding yourself, breaking old patterns, and moving forward.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be in crisis to start therapy?

No. You don't have to hit rock bottom or wait until everything falls apart. If you're tired of feeling the way you feel — overthinking, stuck in the same patterns, going through the motions — that's reason enough. Therapy isn't just for fixing what's broken. It's for understanding yourself and building a life that feels more like your own.

What happens in the first session?

We talk. I'll ask what brought you in, what you've been dealing with, and what you want to be different. There's no test to pass and nothing you have to prepare. By the end, we'll both have a sense of whether we're a good fit and what working together could look like.

I've never done therapy before. What should I expect?

It's a conversation — not a lecture, not an interrogation. You don't need to have the right words or know where to start. A lot of people feel awkward the first time, and that's completely normal. My job is to make it feel like a real conversation, not a clinical exercise.

How long does therapy take?

It depends on what you're working on. Some people come for a few months to work through something specific. Others stay longer because they find it useful to have ongoing support. There's no required timeline — we'll check in regularly about whether it's still helping and adjust as we go.

Do you offer in-person or telehealth sessions?

I offer telehealth sessions for clients anywhere in Arizona. Right now I'm fully virtual — no in-person office yet — so you can meet from wherever you're most comfortable.

Do you take insurance?

Yes — I'm in-network with Aetna, BlueCross and BlueShield, Carelon Behavioral Health, Cigna and Evernorth, and Quest Behavioral Health. I also offer private-pay sessions, which means no insurance company deciding how many sessions you get or what's on your record. If you're unsure about your coverage, reach out and we'll figure it out together.

How much does it cost?

Sessions are $150 for 50 minutes. Private pay is available if you'd rather keep insurance out of it entirely.

Is what I tell you confidential?

Yes. What you share in therapy stays between us, with very few legal exceptions (like imminent risk of harm to yourself or someone else, or suspected abuse of a child or vulnerable adult). I'll explain exactly how confidentiality works in our first session so there are no surprises.

How do I know if we're a good fit?

Honestly? You'll feel it. Therapy works best when you feel comfortable being honest — even about the uncomfortable stuff. If after a session or two something feels off, tell me. I'd rather have that conversation than have you quietly disappear. And if I'm not the right person for what you need, I'll help you find someone who is.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule?

Life happens. Just give me at least 24 hours' notice and we'll find another time. Late cancellations or no-shows may be charged the full session fee.

Do you work with older adults?

Yes — it's a big part of my practice. I work with older adults on grief and loss, loneliness, adjusting to retirement or a move, health changes, and the stress that comes with aging and caregiving. Sessions are telehealth, and I help with the tech setup if needed.

My parent isn't comfortable with technology. Can they still do telehealth?

Absolutely. Most of my older clients felt the same way at first. I walk you through the setup step by step before the first session — once it's going, it's just a video call. No tech skills required.
